Launch of International Food and Biotech Investment Conference

The need for diversifying the economy and multiplying several types of products for export purposes is becoming more important. The government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has established a conducive environment for business because of the country’s stable political conditions, low air pollution level and crime rates, as well as the fact that Brunei Darussalam is a country with the highest standard of living in Asia.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources emphasised the matter at the launch of the International Food and Biotech Investment Conference, yesterday morning.

The conference continued with a keynote address by an economist and 1996 Nobel laureate in economics sciences, Sir James Alexander Mirrlees. He, among other matters, shared his ideas on prospects for small economies. According to him, small economies can flourish, even when their resource reserves are much diminished, if they have invested much of their resource income.

The function ran concurrently with the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding and Letters of Intent. The three day conference is attended by more than 200 people including participants from China and Hong Kong. Apart from focusing on investment opportunities in the halal Industry Sector, the conference also aimed to disseminate information on the Brunei Halal Certificate.
