5th November, 2015

THE Brunei government is “serious” to work with the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor to further position Brunei as a geostrategic trade hub in ASEAN, said Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II.

In a recent interview with The Business Report, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock (pic), said the sultanate’s trade with China has been growing rapidly and that China is playing a crucial role in Brunei’s economic diversification efforts.

“Trade with China has shot up very fast and is growing neck and neck with Japan,” YB Pehin Dato Lim said, adding that China-Brunei trade volume was “up two to three times in the last 10 years.”

“We have been working (with China) in all aspects on the governmental side and will continue good relations. We appreciate very much China’s contribution and support and we want to really expand this.”

The minister said China is already building various infrastructure in Brunei including highways, bridges and petrochemical plants. The Business Report is producing a special report to be incorporated within the Business Section of the China Daily.

The report will be published in January 2016 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei.

Twelve potential projects which include joint ventures on agriculture, tourism and health have been identified as areas for cooperation under the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor.
